I know this book was overshadowed a little by her netflix series (which, hate me if you want, but it was just not as good as the books! Why did they cram everything into six episodes?! I digress), but I have really been looking forward to it. There hasn't been a single thing Leigh Bardugo has written that I haven't enjoyed. Even when I start to pick up the plot and think I know the ending, I still enjoy the journey and the experience of being with these characters.
First off, I love that Kaz and Jesper and Wyatt and Inej made it into this book. I love their story so much and I'm so glad it continues even in a little way. Also, Nina's story became more than I ever thought possible so many books ago when we first met her. I just feel like a proud parent watching all my babies grow up.
Ah! Nikolai and Zoya, the slowest burning romance ever, but I still live for it. I know this series is only supposed to be a duology but there's no way it can end here! We have not gone through so much for only this!
Also, usually when book series get to their war sections (which always seems to be inevitable) I start to lose interest and dream of tapping out, but not so in this one! I think it worked so well for me because the focus of the story always stayed on the characters. There wasn't much time spent with the war or even watching it because instead you were watching the characters. It's like when a bride comes down the isle and everyone is looking at her but she's looking at the groom, the characters are the groom and the bride is the war, get where I'm going with this? We stay focused on the people we've grown to love and really feel them through the whole process. It was beautiful and I lived for it.
And, completely unrelated, but do books have to keep getting so long? It is so hard to convince my kids to leave me alone long enough to finish these in any timely manner and I always end up having to make food or do laundry or any other trivial thing right when something big is happening. I cannot tell you how many times I pretend I'm going to the bathroom but really I'm reading. I'm not alone in this right?
Thus we come to the great handing out of the stars. 5/5 (after all that you can't possibly be surprised by that right?) and PG-13.
