This book immediately goes down as one I must own. It just encapsulated perfection in so many ways that I feel like I'll never recover. The book hangover on this one is going to be devastating.
Right away this one got me because it is a human vs fairy prince story (at least until it's not haha) and I love those. Anyone else huge fans of Holly Black?!? The difference here though is that Isobel is relatable right away. I didn't need her back story to make me like her, she was exactly what I would wish I could be in that situation. I mean, would you turn away eternal life even though your skills earned it for you? Could you still do that once you'd found love with a fairy? This is such a complex theme in the book and I just lived for it.
Isobel is an incredible painter who has fairies come to her to paint them because in this version, fairies can't do anything considered 'Craft' without dying. I loved that twist that made them need humans. Have you ever heard of a fairy who didn't like pretty things? And I loved that the 'flaw' that existed in the fairy prince, Rook, is that he can experience human emotions. I've never read about fairies that couldn't feel before and it was such a cool twist. Basically it was all a cool twist that took me by surprise how much I loved it.
Anyway, she paints Rook's flaw into her portrait of him, which makes him appear weak to the fairies he rules, and a weak fairy is a dead fairy. So he comes to her and forces her to come with him to stand trial for what she's done. And that, dear reader, is where I must stop because otherwise I'll end up giving too much away!
Basically this has been an awesome week of awesome books. My mind and my heart have been filled. Really I feel like that's all I can ask for.
Also, not related, but I discovered that I had read another book by this author, Margaret Rogerson last year! It was also excellent and unfortunately just got swept up in the fog that was 2020. This author will be on my must read list for sure! She might even be taking over that coveted 'favorite author' spot that was recently vacated by Sarah J. Maas. (Was anyone else super disappointed in her last few books?)
Anyway, I have to give this one 6/5 stars. It's just too good for only 5! And a rating of PG-13.
